December 2020 overview: Over 100,000 new hotel rooms set to open

The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that more than 100,000 rooms will go live in December, with APAC and North America accounting for two-thirds of the total.

483 hotels with 103,534 keys will open around the world this month, our researchers have discovered. We find out more about these exciting launches.

December 2020 hotel openings by region

The APAC region will see the strongest growth in December with 189 hotel openings and 45,390 additional rooms planned, while North America follows in its wake with 124 properties and 27,015 keys.

Europe comes in a distant third place, however, with 87 projects and 12,556 rooms on the cards. Meanwhile, 37 hotels with 9,939 rooms will launch in the Middle East, 28 properties with 6,024 rooms are slated to open in Africa, and a mere 18 launches and 2,610 keys are in the pipeline across Latin America.

Key national growth markets in December

Having successfully bounced back from Covid-related lockdowns and business slow-downs, China leads the list of national growth markets with 117 planned openings and 28,690 rooms.

The US comes in second place with 92 launches and 19,336 keys, while the UK is a long way back in third with 21 properties and 3,016 keys. Next up is Mexico with 18 openings and 3,688 rooms.

Thailand will see 17 hotels open their doors, by way of comparison, just ahead of the UAE with 14 projects. Vietnam and France are next in line with 12 and ten launches respectively, and Poland and Qatar complete the top ten with eight and seven hotels each.

Top cities in terms of hotel openings

Dubai tops our list with 14 openings and 3,975 new rooms. New York and Shanghai share second place with seven properties each and 1,817 and 1,457 keys respectively, whereas London will see six projects completed, adding 880 keys to the UK capital’s offering.

Hong Kong, Doha, Kunming and San Francisco will all get five new hotels, and four properties are being lined up for both Wuhan and Shenzhen.

Fastest growing hotel brands

Hampton by Hilton will see the most rapid growth in December 2020, our database indicates, with 15 properties and 1,983 additional keys. Not far behind, Ramada Worldwide and Citadines Apart’hotels will both expand their offering by 11 properties with 2,440 and 2,072 rooms respectively.

Further down the list, Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts will grow its portfolio by ten hotels with 2,013 rooms, while Hilton Garden Inn will add nine properties and 1,633 keys worldwide.

Both DoubleTree by Hilton and Marriott Hotels & Resorts will each grow their footprints by eight hotels, just ahead of Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, Hyatt Regency Hotels and Courtyard by Marriott with seven properties apiece.

Noteworthy hotel openings in December 2020

In South Korea, the new Grand Hyatt Jeju will have 1,600 keys in total, consisting of 750 hotel rooms and 850 hotel residences. The property will also boast a staggering 11 F&B outlets, approximately 1,200 sq m of meeting space, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness centre, a Western and Korean spa, and two kids’ clubs.

Elsewhere in the APAC region, FourPoints by Sheraton Hong Kong, Tung Chung will open close to the airport. This 630-key hotel will boast several dining venues, which will feature the brand’s signature Best Brews programme enabling guests to sample the region’s best craft beers. Visitors will also be able to explore a host of public spaces and work up a sweat at its state-of-the-art gym.

Over in Qatar, Pullman Doha Bridge Towers will offer 468 elegant rooms and serviced apartments in the West Bay area, the capital’s upscale business district. Its three stylish restaurants and extensive meeting space, which includes a ballroom of over 1,300 sq m, should help the hotel stand out from the crowd.

In the heart of Riyadh, meanwhile, Damac Arjaan by Rotana will offer 454 luxurious hotel rooms and apartments. Situated only a stone’s throw from the airport, this elegantly designed property promises to be ideal for business travellers and families alike.

Lastly, Roda Jewel of the Creek – Dubai will add 455 keys to the emirate’s luxury offering. Set by the Al Maktoum Bridge, the mixed-use complex will feature a hotel, four towers of luxury furnished apartments, a 60-berth marina, a cutting-edge spa and a fitness centre. With a 3,000-person capacity ballroom, a shopping mall and over 15 F&B outlets, it’s shaping up to be one of the UAE’s most important developments in 2020.
